Learning Russian

Well, my head is spinning, I suppose I was never that adventurous with language, I took 4 years of Spanish, but never anything else. Learning Russian is a challenge. Learning to read Cyrillic characters makes my head hurt! Poor people from EE trying to learn English, I can't imagine.

I have been on a Rosetta Stone language web page for 2 days, and I have to say, I am a little better at recognizing the beginner words, but not so great at writing them! and no where near ready to read anything else! I was excited to learn that I could use Rosetta Stone from my local library using my library card, without spending any money, isn't that great!?

Ева будет нашей дочерью скоро (Eva will be our daughter soon) Желающий бог (God Willing) All I want is to be able to talk even a little in her language, it will be hard enough for her to leave the only home she has ever known, I know she will learn English eventually, but it may help for her to hear her language too. I was told her region speaks mainly Russian, though we also have a Ukrainian Phrase book just in case.

Мы надеемся каждый день, что мы получаем известие от SDA, прося, что мы можем путешествовать после Благодарения. (We are hoping every day that we hear from the SDA, praying that we can travel after Thanksgiving.)

Доброй ночи, просите со мной, что я изучаю некоторого русского скоро. (Goodnight, pray with me that I learn some Russian soon)

Learn "How much does it cost?", "Do you have an english menu?", "Thank you", "goodbye" (they actually say "hello", so you got that one!) and my favorite....PAKA (which is bye/see ya later). As for the rest, you will be fine! You'll have Masha right there to take you shopping and stuff. And Eva will catch on to english suprisingly fast!

I know how you feel! Hungarian is not much easier. Although there are no special characters to learn, there are many different accents over the letters that change the pronunciation ever so slightly. They can also change the meaning so there's no getting around them!
Hang in there and try to learn only the absolute essentials. You'll pick up more of the language once you're over there and surrounded by people speaking it. Have fun, too! Martha J.

Oh wow, yes, I know, I have seen the accent marks, though in Russian they say the usage is rare, I wonder how rare?

I purchased some EXCELLENT CD's put together by another adoptive parent called, "Russian for the Adoption Parent." Over 80 different phrases you can use to speak to your child (things like, "I love you" "I am your mommy" "Can I hold you" "Don't cry," etc.). They are fantastic and I have learned so much. I will see if I can find the link to the website and send it to you. Russian is definitely a difficult language, I am just glad that they have so many hard and fast rules that govern it, unlike English!

I have learned so much! My kids have even picked up quite a bit and we have fun speaking to each other in Russian (of course, they did not gravitate towards sweet phrases like, "I love you," but to "Do you need to pee?" "Do you need to poop?").

Hi Valerie, I bought that too, the link for it is in my old blog! Still, I find I want a fundamental understanding of the language, not just phrases I have learned. I am enjoying the Rosetta Stone lessons, but they frustrate me because they introduce new words and I have no idea what they mean. So I found another site to learn them as well. Also learning their alphabet, and I am getting better at that, still have a LONG way to go.
